She Wins! |

3 April 2004
Well, the competition season has officially begun! Last weekend I competed in Miami at the Fitness and Bikini South Beach Pageant. The whole weekend was a lot of fun. I flew out of Boston Friday evening with fellow competitor Alison Correira. Saturday morning we woke up early to head down to the competitor meeting in the hotel. It was good to see our friends from home- Jen Tedford-Zuba, Dawn Butterfield, and Tricia Hoyt. We all work with Cathy Savage here in New England and it is always fun to share competition experiences together. It was also nice to see some familiar faces and to meet some new girls as well. At the meeting, Lou informed us that his contract was not honored and we did not have a stage as promised. Instead, we were told we would be performing on a plywood platform. That got me a little nervous as I wasn’t sure how that would affect my ability to do my routine but I was happy that we would still be able to go on with the show! The rest of Saturday was spent at the Fitness Festival where we participated in a variety of events. My favorite was doing the Zumba dance which was also a great workout and warm up for the next day. Dawn spotted an ad for a “hot body contest” at a local bar and Alison, Dawn, and I decided since we were in competition shape and could use the 700 dollar cash prize, we had nothing to lose by entering. Unfortunately, we got there a little late and were unable to enter. At that point, we decided to relax, have some dinner and unwind before the big day. After being exhausted for days on end, I woke up Sunday feeling rejuvenated. After ordering some coffee, Alison and I headed to the pool. While she did a photo shoot with a local photographer, I practiced my routine outside on the concrete. I figured if I could do my routine on concrete, I could do it anywhere. Before we knew it, it was time to head to the venue. Alison was surprisingly calm given that this was her first competition. I, on the other hand, started getting very anxious. I always get butterflies a few hours before I perform no matter how prepared I feel. Once the competition started, the event moved very quickly. Everyone looked beautiful and all the fitness girls executed their routines without any problems. Dawn performed her adorable routine as Dorothy. Jen Tedford-Zuba had us clapping praises to her inspirational music and Tricia Hoyt was stunning performing her American themed routine. I felt good about my performance as well with my Little Mermaid theme. After all of our hard work, they brought the fitness girls out on stage to announce the top 5 placings. I was thrilled when Tricia was called out for 5th place and then again when Jen placed 3rd. When they announced the winner and called my name I was…well stunned is probably the best word for it. I stood there looking around. I just couldn’t believe it! It really was a great feeling to be standing on that stage after months of hard work. Before I knew it, they called out the Bikini girls for placings. Once again, Tricia made top 5 and I was tickled when they announced me in 2nd place. And then Jen was announced as the bikini winner. What a wonderful feeling to be standing next to the girls I train with. We were all thrilled. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay with my friends to celebrate as I had to leave immediately to catch my flight home. After barely making it to the gate in time, I had my own little celebration on the plane with some chocolate chip cookies. However, I started back to clean eating and twice a day workouts this week as the Fitness Atlantic competition is only 3 weeks away!
