The Marta Mathews diaries
By Marta Mathews

I will not write much about my weekend as it was tarnished with a couple of not so glorious diet moments. I was firmly determined to stay focused as I was leaving home on Friday night but the travel fairy messed with my control senses again. It’s a curse. Every time I travel I seem to loose the keys to my senses and I usually don’t find them until I arrive back at home. Luckily this was a very short trip.

Today I was back on track with my diet and the next trip I’m taking will be to Toronto for my October 31 competition. In fact, I performed two separate cardio sessions to make up for the weekend splurges. I got up at 5:00 a.m. and did 35 minutes of treadmill on the highest incline possible and a speed of 3.6 miles per hour. Then at lunch I went back for another 30 minutes of stationery bike activity. I finished the day by working out shoulders and abdominals. Needless to say I am quite tired right now even though it’s only 9:30 p.m. I’m going to go and have a protein shake with skim milk, pack my four meals for tomorrow and go to bed.

I decided to drop Creatine effective immediately as I have gained over 15 lbs during the four-week period I have been supplementing with it. That is actually quite a bit more weight than I expected. I knew I gained some mass over the last four weeks as I definitely felt it and looked it (I lost my cuts despite very clean diet and strict workout regimen) but my clothes did not give me any indication that I have actually packed on 15 lbs. So from now on I'm going to start dropping my calories a little bit until I get down to a lean 130 lbs for the show. I have thirty-six days left to the Man Show and I feel pretty confident that I will drop the extra pounds without too much trouble. This week I am still maintaining my caloric intake at approximately
1800-2000 calories per day as I'm curious to see how much water weight I will loose in one week without Creatine. I expect to drop at least eight pounds of water, but we'll wait and see how week seven starts out. Bottom line I'm not going to look at my body weight as an indication of my progress since the only thing that matters in the end is how my physique looks to the judges. If it looks lean and toned then it does not matter if I weight 200 lbs. I always have to keep that in mind, as it's just too easy to allow the scales play some serious mind tricks with a dieting woman like myself.

For a reason that I can’t understand, I was having a very difficult treadmill cardio session this morning. In fact, my shins hurt so much that I had to switch to a stationery bike to complete my morning workout. I will not be taking any Creatine this afternoon. In fact, I have decided to switch my workout routine from now on as well. I will start lifting less weight and perform more reps in order to recover my cuts in time for the competition. I’m really worried now that the water retention will not give as easily as I’m expecting it to. Too bad I don’t know of any females that ever experimented with it as I would have loved to know how their bodies reacted to this supplement while they were on it and after the fact. Having this knowledge would give me some sort of an indication as to what I can expect, but I guess now I’m left with finding out on my own.

Today I went to see a couple of my friends compete in an IFBB Bodybuilding and Figure competitions held in Brantford, Ontario. Both of them looked amazing on the stage and I’m confident that they will be taking some trophies home tonight. I myself have been toying with an idea to compete in Figure but I didn’t know if I had what it takes to do Figure. After seeing today’s competition I realized Figure is not something completely out of my league. It would be challenging, but most definitely an achievable goal if I put my mind to it, so it was definitely a trip worth taking. Not only did I get to cheer my friends on, but also I learned that there is something other than Fitness Model that I can try and pursue in the future.

It’s Sunday morning and for some reason I am not feeling very energized today. In fact, I’m feeling kind of blue and I don’t feel like going to the gym or doing anything at all. I stepped on a scale this morning (one day before I planned) and discovered that I have dropped over 10 lbs of water this week after stopping my Creatine supplementation, but even this is not making me happy. It’s a gorgeous day outside. I think I will go get some coffee and go roller-blading. I find that being outside usually puts me in a better mood, so hopefully it will today.
