The Marta Mathews diaries
By Marta Mathews
Mon Feb 16, 2004

It’s another Monday and I’m ready to kick some butt following my not so great diet moments this Valentine’s Day weekend. On top of this, I didn’t have time to go to the gym yesterday which makes me feel even worse. The only good thing that I managed to accomplish this weekend was learning how to pose on stage…. No, let me rephrase that… I ATTEMPTED to learn how to pose on stage! My lack of grace and co-ordination scares me sometimes and I’m so glad I finally managed to get some professional guidance on the subject. If I’m going to lose at FAME it better be because I didn’t do a good job on the dieting and training, not because I didn’t know how to pose. Having said that, thanks to Daryl Gazey and his lovely partner Bren, now at least I know what my presentation should look like once I get up on the stage. Although I still lack in the grace department, at least I have an idea on what I need to do to look presentable in front of the judges. I have the mental image in my head, now I just have to follow that mental blueprint in order to present my physique in the best possible light come contest day.

Tue Feb 17, 2004

My bulking blitz is almost over… Four more workouts and I will be done. Just in time to start my cutting towards FAME. I have added four more pictures to my bulking album to demonstrate to progress I have made so far.

The first three pictures were taken Jan. 1 – at that point my diet was relatively clean, I was doing weights at least five times per week and cardio (30-60 minutes) at least three to four times per week. Since I started my bulk I almost completely gave up cardio and focused on my weight lifting instead. I have also cleaned up my diet to as much as 80% clean and 20% not bad but certainly not ideal. The four pictures I’ve added were taken last weekend. It’s hard to see, but I have added some mass to my biceps and legs. And the most pleasant surprise of all, my tummy actually got tighter! It is still covered in fluff, but once the fluff comes off my cuts should come out pretty nicely… I never imagined my body could do this without cardio! Mind you I did about three or four 20 minute cardio sessions lately, but that is nothing in comparison to what I used to do. Here are the pics:

I won’t be writing about my leg workout yesterday as it was identical to the one I did last week.

As for my diet, I have no time to write it all out, but it was super clean… I will post my totals instead:

Calories: 1843

Fat: 63 g / 31%
Carbs: 83 g / 16%
Protein: 237 g / 52%

I’ve done a great job with my diet yesterday..

Also, I found myself tired at a wildly early hour of 7:00 p.m. last evening, so I listened to my body and went right to bed. Result? Ten hours of solid sleep! Nothing could be better for me than sleep following my Leg show off at the gym…

Thu Feb 19, 2004

I got a day off work yesterday and I decided to spend it taking it easy. It was nice to get up as late as I wanted to and not have to rush out the door. Even though I don’t yet have kids, my life is a very hectic one and I always seem to be in a huge rush to do one thing or another. I went to the tanning salon, took my time training abs, and even squeezed in 30 minutes of cardio in lieu of yet another photo shoot this coming Saturday. I drove to Hamilton at noon and met my man for lunch. We went to a Japanese restaurant for some quality sushi... YUM! Afterwards, I went to a shoe store and purchased a new pair of stilettos for FAME. All in all, a very productive day even though I was moving in slow motion…

Today I am a bit tired as I stayed up waaay too long, but I’m not complaining since it’s already Thursday and the weekend is almost here.

My cut towards FAME is going to start March 1st… I’ve been forced to keep my diet super clean over the last few weeks do to my shoots, so even though I’m eating enough, my diet is sickly clean and boring. As a result, I’m seriously considering treating myself to a cheat meal every single day next week following my photo shoot. This means seven days of eating clean except for one meal a day (I’m thinking breakfast) and once March 1st comes then no more cheating… I really feel like I haven’t been able to really treat myself this month and I don’t like the idea of dieting for four straight months whether it’s bulking or cutting. Having said that, I will probably have some serious pancakes or waffles for breakfast next week… hell, maybe even pizza or pasta. On this note, I better stop writing about food because I’m starting to get tempted to kick start my cheating right away…

Sun Feb 22, 2004

I haven’t been keeping my diary on track over for the last couple of days because not much has changed since my last update. I am right on schedule with my bulking blitz which will be completed at some point this coming week. I have been forced to keep my diet super clean last week due to my photo shoot which took place yesterday. I was planning on having a cheat meal every day during the last week of February, which also happens to be the final week of my bulking blitz, but again I am forced to say good-bye to my cheats as I have two more photo shoots lined up for next Saturday. Having said that, I have decided to keep my diet super clean next week and treat myself all day next Sunday, Feb. 29/04. I’m already looking forward to all the goodies The last two months have passed so much quicker than I expected! Countdown to FAME begins soon! The next few months will be very exciting for me as I have also decided to register for FAME in Miami! Yes, that’s right! I will be doing two back to back competitions! I don’t know how I will swing two shows in one week, but it will sure be interesting...

Mon Feb 23, 2004

I am back to eating super clean this week as I want to look really good for my upcoming photo shoots. I am still not done eating for the day, so I will post my diet tomorrow as I haven’t been doing that lately.

As for my training, I am trying something new yet again. Specifically, I’ve decided that I need to bring my abs out as much as possible for my shoots. The technique that I have incorporated to help them come out of the winter fluff is called “ZANE BLITZ”...

Zane’s Purpose - To bring out a lagging body part as quickly as possible.

Method - Two weeks of pure bombardment of the target muscle group

Marta’s Target Muscle Group Requiring Punishment - ABS

Here is how it works -

Day One - Train abs with 25 sets to failure (I pick 5 different exercises and perform five sets of each to failure)
Day Two - Train abs with 15 sets to failure
Day Three - Train abs with 10 sets to failure
Day Four - Relax
Day Five - Train abs with 25 sets to failure
Day Six - Train abs with 4 sets to failure
Day Seven - Relax
Day Eight - Relax
Day nine - START OVER

I have already completed cycle 1 and shockingly enough I notice a lot more definition in my target area. I have started my second cycle yesterday and I should have some pretty nice abs for Saturday. I bet the cameras will be impressed As I go on my cut I might hit another lagging body part in a similar fashion. I will say this though - The Zane blitz is NO fun at all! So be prepared to fry your muscles and risk dying at the gym!

NOTE*** Zane was the three time world champion, so the man knew what he was doing when he designed this killer routine.
